Montana tax forms & filing.

Montana has progressive brackets that were simplified in recent legislation. Montana has no state sales tax — relying instead on a more pronounced income tax structure. We file Form 2 for residents and nonresidents.

Things to know about filing in Montana

  • Montana has no state sales tax. The full revenue burden falls on income tax (individual + corporate) and property tax, which is why state income tax rates can feel higher relative to surrounding states.
  • Montana historically allowed a deduction for federal income taxes paid on the state return — eliminated as part of the 2021 tax simplification package (effective 2024 forward) when Montana restructured its brackets.
  • Montana has a partial exclusion for certain retirement income but does tax most Social Security and pension income — verify treatment at intake for retirees.

Montana no-sales-tax — full revenue burden on income + property

Montana has no state sales tax — one of only five states without one. The full state revenue burden falls on income tax (individual + corporate) and property tax. This is why Montana income tax rates feel higher relative to no-income-tax states without offsetting consumption taxes.

Practical effect: Montana residents see higher income-tax burden than residents of states with broad-based sales tax — but escape the consumption-tax burden on day-to-day purchases. The trade-off favors residents who consume heavily (vacationers, retirees on fixed incomes) and disfavors high-earning W-2 workers.

Montana's tax structure is one factor in the recent population growth from California and other high-cost states — combined with the no-sales-tax benefit, the overall Montana cost-of-living for low-spending households can be attractive.

Montana 2024 tax restructure — simplified brackets, eliminated federal deduction

Montana significantly restructured its individual income tax effective the 2024 tax year. The state moved from a 7-bracket progressive structure to a 2-bracket simplified structure, and the federal income tax deduction (a longstanding Montana feature) was eliminated.

The combination produced a structural shift in Montana state-tax calculation. Filers who remember the old multi-bracket-plus-federal-deduction approach will see different numbers under the new system, with high-federal-tax filers losing the federal deduction benefit they previously enjoyed.

We apply the post-2024 structure on current returns and don't carry forward old patterns. For clients with carryover items from pre-2024 years, we confirm at intake that the carryovers are still relevant under the new structure.

Where's my refund?

Multi-state considerations

If you lived or worked in more than one state during the tax year, you typically file a part-year resident return in each state. If you live in one state and work in another, you usually file as a resident where you live and as a nonresident in the work state — claiming a credit on the resident return for taxes paid to the work state. Reciprocity agreements between some neighboring states change this default; we map this out at intake.

Montana-specific multi-state nuances are addressed in the quirks list above when they apply.
