What we don't do — and how we handle it
TaxOwl Advisors is an AFSP-credentialed practice with limited IRS representation rights (see disclosures below). Some IRS work requires unlimited representation rights — CPA, EA, or attorney credentials we don't hold. When you need that work, we refer to a credentialed partner.
Services we refer to credentialed partners
The following work requires unlimited representation rights before the IRS under Treasury Department Circular 230. We maintain referral relationships with select CPA firms and tax attorneys for these cases:
- IRS audit representation (correspondence, office, or field)
- Offer in Compromise applications
- Installment agreement negotiation
- Currently Not Collectible applications
- Lien release / certificate of discharge
- Penalty abatement disputes (beyond a single first-time letter)
- Tax court petitions
- Custom tax planning structures requiring legal opinion
Initial consultation about whether you need this kind of help is free. If you do, we'll connect you with a partner firm and stay involved as your prep contact.
Filing in your state?
We file in all 50 states. Each state has its own forms, deadlines, and quirks — see the per-state guides for what to expect:
New-client offer + standalone discount programs
| Program | Offer | Eligibility |
|---|---|---|
| New-client inclusions (tier-matched) | Tier-specific bonus — see tier cards above | New clients only — every engagement includes more than the return, matched to the engagement tier (withholding review · Diagnostic Report · audit-stage support · reasonable comp analysis). Bonuses scale with tier and are included in the flat fee. |
| Early-Engagement Discount | 10% off individual returns | Engagement letter signed AND tax organizer submitted by February 15. Renews each tax year. |
| Active Military | 10% off individual returns | Active-duty military ID required. |
Discounts do not stack — pick the single program that benefits you most. Total discount is capped at 20% per engagement as a matter of pricing integrity. Founding Member rates have been retired; existing Founding Member clients retain their locked rate per their original engagement. The previous $75 Referral Credit program was retired June 7, 2026 — referrals are now recognized through a complimentary mid-year planning consultation at the two-referral threshold, not a cash discount on returns. See /refer/ for the current framing.

Start the tax organizerAudit support — definition
Audit support means: providing copies of your prepared return, supporting documents, and answering preparer-side questions if the IRS contacts you about a return we prepared. It does not include representation. For full audit defense, we refer to a credentialed partner (see "What we don't do").
Specialist credentials
TaxOwl Advisors specialists hold an active Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) issued by the Internal Revenue Service. We are not Certified Public Accountants, Enrolled Agents, or attorneys. Our representation rights before the IRS are limited per Treasury Department Circular 230. Initial consultations about whether your situation requires credentialed work are free.
Privacy and §7216 consent
Our Privacy Notice describes how we collect, use, store, and protect your tax return information. We obtain your written consent under IRS §7216 before using or disclosing your tax return information for any purpose other than preparing your return.
Engagement letter
All client work is governed by a written engagement letter that must be signed before we begin. The engagement letter sets out scope, fees, payment terms, dispute resolution, and termination rights. The flat fee quoted is the price you pay for in-scope work; if scope expands during preparation, we notify you before doing additional work.
Service standards
Standard turnaround is 7-10 business days after all documents are received. Rush service is not available. All services are priced as listed; situations beyond our standard scope are referred to specialist firms. Payment is due upon receipt of the invoice. Work begins once payment and complete documents are received and the engagement letter is signed.
Refund policy
Full refund if no work has been performed. Fees for work performed in good faith are non-refundable. If you believe our work was deficient, the dispute resolution process in your engagement letter governs.
