Build your tax career with us.
TaxOwl Advisors is a remote-first tax practice growing through an apprenticeship model — students, recent grads, and career changers learn the work alongside a 19-year senior preparer, earn fee-split income on real returns, and graduate ready to run their own practice. We don't hire W-2 senior preparers; we develop the next generation.
What we offer
- Real returns, not just data entry. You prepare; a 19-year senior preparer reviews and teaches. After 1-2 seasons you've handled complexity that takes most preparers a decade to see.
- Fee-split compensation. Earn a percentage of every return's prep fee after senior review and client sign-off. Splits scale as your quality and volume grow.
- Proper tooling. Modern prep stack, secure document folders (Box) per engagement, Stripe-based billing, encrypted messaging. The same tools you'd want to use in your own practice eventually.
- Year-round access. Annual returns are the floor; planning consultations, IRS notice work, and quarterly check-ins continue past April 15. Year-round income, year-round learning.
- Remote-first, async-friendly. Fits around class schedules and other commitments. Text and email-based communication culture, not endless calls.
- Path to your own practice. Apprentices who eventually launch their own practice get founding-alumni pricing on TaxOwl Pro — the platform you trained on becomes the platform you run on.
Who we're looking for
- Accounting or finance students currently enrolled at any AACSB- or regionally-accredited US program — on-campus or online. We've worked with apprentices from USF Muma College of Business, University of Tampa, Saint Leo University, Hillsborough Community College, Keller Graduate School of Management, and similar programs; applicants from any accredited program are welcome.
- Recent graduates from accounting/finance programs who want real preparer experience as a launching pad.
- Career changers and mid-career professionals — including those impacted by recent layoffs — coming from adjacent fields (finance, accounting, bookkeeping, banking, tech ops, operations). Tax preparation is a stable, high-demand second career; we'll teach the practice from the inside.
- Tax-prep training program students and alumni — applicants must be currently enrolled in or have completed an accredited tax-prep training program. Common pathways include H&R Block Income Tax Course, Liberty Tax School, Jackson Hewitt's preparer program, Surgent Income Tax School, Surgent CPE, IRS VITA training, or any state-approved tax preparer course.
- PTIN guidance provided. Don't have one yet? We'll walk you through getting registered. AFSP Record of Completion fee reimbursed after season completion.
- Strong attention to detail and willingness to ask questions before guessing. The single most important trait we screen for.
- Comfort with remote document workflows. All client interaction happens via secure document folders and email — no in-office walk-ins.
- 15-25 hours/week during peak tax season (January through April 15). Lighter workload off-season for planning consultations and continuing client work.
Junior Preparer / Apprentice (Mentorship Track)
Built for accounting students, recent graduates, and career changers across the US — from accredited college programs (on-campus or online) to recognized tax-prep training pathways (H&R Block Income Tax Course, Liberty Tax School, Jackson Hewitt's preparer program, Surgent Income Tax School, IRS VITA, and similar). We've worked with apprentices from USF Muma, University of Tampa, Saint Leo, Hillsborough CC, and Keller Graduate School of Management — applicants from any accredited program or recognized tax-prep pathway are encouraged to apply. Learn the practice the way you can't from a classroom — real returns, real clients, real review by a senior preparer who actually teaches you what you missed.
Compensation: fee-split structure tied to returns prepared. You earn a percentage of the prep fee on every return you complete (after senior review and client sign-off). Senior preparer fee covers the review time. Splits scale with experience — start at one tier, move up after demonstrated quality and volume. We make the math work for both sides.
What you get out of it:
- Direct mentorship from a 19-year preparer — not a training video
- Exposure to high-income complex returns: equity comp, multi-state, K-1s, Schedule C
- AFSP Record of Completion guidance + reimbursement of the annual filing-season program fee after season completion
- Real per-return income (not just unpaid intern hours)
- Letter of recommendation + verifiable practice experience for future credentialing (CPA, EA path)
- Remote-first — fits around your class schedule
What we need from you: active PTIN (we'll guide you through getting one if you don't have one yet), strong attention to detail, willingness to ask questions before guessing, comfort with secure portal workflows, and 15-25 hours/week during peak tax season (Jan-Apr).
To apply: use the form below or email hello@taxowl.co with your résumé, a brief paragraph on why tax preparation interests you, and your school + expected graduation date.
